Session 2: Learning from real-world experiences - The role of trials and test-beds in shaping the 5G vision

The last 12 months have seen an increasing amount of 5G trials and testbeds, providing an opportunity to experience 5G in action in real-world scenarios. These trials are invaluable in proving the 5G concept, as well as for learning and pushing the boundaries of how 5G can meet new needs.

- How have test beds and trials performed against technology claims that have been made for 5G?
- What lessons have been learnt, and have any unexpected challenges or opportunities emerged?
- How has the involvement of vertical industries in trials helped to define more accurately the requirements that they may have for 5G?
- Have the experiences of 5G trials affected any aspect of the 5G vision and of how next generation services will be delivered?

Session 3: 5G Roundtables – Paving the way to deliver the promises of 5G

There are a number of key building blocks that need to be in place in order for 5G to truly fulfil its potential. This afternoon’s sessions will focus on 4 of these – connectivity, standards, development of sustainable business models and security / privacy. In each case, panellists will discuss the challenges that still need to be overcome and the roadmap ahead in order to ensure 5G delivers on its promises.

The sessions will take the form of 4 mini panels of 1 hour, with 3 panellists in each.

Panel 3.1 - Connectivity

- How can it be ensured that an infrastructure and network are in place that meet the dual challenges in delivering the required capacity and densification of networks in built up areas; and the required coverage in rural areas?
- What are the key spectrum bands for this, and more generally for the rollout and long-term deployment of 5G?
- To what extent is the World Radiocommunications Conference later this year (WRC-19) going to define spectrum and connectivity provisions for 5G?
- What technology mix will be necessary to deliver on the 5G vision, and how can it be ensured that sufficient spectrum is available to meet the connectivity requirements of each of these stakeholders?

- Where do we stand with setting the standards for 5G, and what challenges still remain?
- What are the next steps following on from the recent 3GPP ‘release 15’, and what should be the key priorities as we build up to ‘release 16’?
- How do 5G standards differ from those for previous generations? What lessons have been learnt from 1G through to 4G, and how are these being taken into account to ensure a successful development and deployment of 5G?
- How can a coherent and co-ordinated approach to the development standards be delivered on a global level and how can we ensure that the risk of standards fragmentation is avoided? How are the various standards bodies working together to achieve this?
- To what extent are we seeing vertical industries getting involved in the standards setting process? Is there a need for this to increase?

- Proposed use cases for 5G can be broadly split into three key proposed application scenarios - enhanced mobile broadband; massive machine-type communication; and ultra-reliable, low-latency communication. Which of these will likely be most important in ensuring the vision of 5G in both the short and long term?
- What vertical industries are likely to develop the most compelling long-term 5G business cases?
- What should the role of governments and other stakeholders be in delivering a 5G environment that encourages innovation and offers a level playing field for both existing players and new market entrants?
