Efficiencies of AI for the Public Sector

Artificial Intelligence could transform public service delivery. Either through cost-saving tied to smarter, simpler online services or by closing the gap between administrations and their citizens, AI-based services could help public authorities focus and expand their activities. These activities are actualised through both national and pan-European strategies. At an EU level, the Commission’s AI strategy released in April 2018 emphasised the need for rolling-out public sector AI, with measures planned to facilitate the re-use of public sector data and funding earmarked for new platforms to exchange information and expertise across borders. At national level, European governments are setting out their own national strategies to develop AI, invest in research and support new applications, notably in France, Finland and Estonia.

HPC for the Public Sector

High-performance computing (HPC) is widely regarded as a vital element of the data revolution that is transforming the way we think about the provision of public sector services. Globally, HPC is progressing at an exponential pace but more needs to be done in Europe to ensure that public institutions at all levels have access to world-class supercomputing facilities. With the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking proposal expected to be formally adopted by the Council of the European Union in September and with 21 European countries now signed up to the EuroHPC Declaration, now is a critical time to discuss the way forward for high-performance computing in Europe.

AI in Healthcare

AI applications are at an early stage in the healthcare sector but have great potential. Uses range from dealing with patient queries to early detection of diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Cancers. AI also brings with it, however, some key challenges, including the use and processing of the data on which it relies. This panel brought together key stakeholders to discuss what role the public sector can play in driving the development of AI’s usages in the healthcare sector on both a national and European level.

Justice and security is one area in which AI is forecast to make a substantial impact.
