Session 2 - Bringing Eco-Design Into The Mainstream

Designing out waste at the manufacturing or build stage is a key component of the European Commission's revised circular economy package. Recent reports have found current EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) guidelines to be inadequate in the drive to make eco-design commonplace and the focus is now turning to modernising design protocol as well as looking at alternative manufacturing processes such as 3D printing to ensure products are economically and environmentally viable in their production and performance.

This session reflected on the design elements covered by the newly released package and discussed how companies will need to incorporate current and future design directives into sustainable and market-orientated business models as well as reducing the carbon footprint of the production of key materials such as aluminium.

Start-ups and SMEs offer up significant innovation potential for the circular economy, as by their nature, they are often more nimble and less restricted by factors which may hinder larger corporations. This session asked to what extent the new circular economy package can drive disruption among traditional sectors, while boosting economic activity at the SME level.

Long term assurances play an important role for stakeholders looking to invest in a profitable and predictable secondary raw materials market in Europe. There have been calls for clear and functional guidelines for the use of resources previously regarded as waste and for accurate ways of tracking these resources and recording their contribution to recycling targets.

More intelligent targets, better regulation for landfill sites, separate collection schemes and the ethical global trade of materials such as aluminium and steel, all featured in this discussion about the effect of circular secondary markets on the European economy.

Breakout 2 – Preventing food waste across the supply chain

It is currently estimated that 100 million tonnes of food is wasted each year in the EU. Without urgent action, this figure is expected to rise to 120 million tonnes by 2020 and a new EU action plan on food waste is predicted to be a vital non-legislative element of the new circular economy package.
In July, Parliament called for the implementation of EU wide targets on food waste and measures to monitor and control the issue, such as food donation guidelines and improved ‘best-before’ and ‘use-by’ labelling are likely to form part of the package released in December. Individual member states, however, have voiced their concerns on legally binding targets.
Looking broadly at new aims and targets to minimise the amount of food thrown away and safely deal with inevitable waste, this session discussed the significance of the new circular economy package for the agricultural and food industries.
