Session 2: Building a globally agreed vision for 5G development and deployment

Last year’s 5G Huddle focussed on developing a global 5G vision. This session will offer the opportunity to look at progress made in the 12 months since then on delivering the technology standardisation that is essential for the global success of future 5G solutions and the related ecosystem, and also look at developing a blueprint for 5G deployment globally.

What progress has been made since last year’s conference in terms of maximising global interoperability, and economies of scale?
What co-ordination is taking place both between regions and different industry sectors?
What are the main priorities in terms of standardisation and what work is being done in this area?
How can a user-centric vision to 5G be ensured based fully around the needs of customers and operators?
What work is being done in developing and standardising a blueprint for 5G deployment?

Session 3: Investment and Infrastructure - Creating the 5G Architecture

Session 4: Making the Leap Forward - Overcoming the Obstacles to 5G Deployment

It is undeniable that a number of obstacles and challenges to 5G wireless network deployment still exist. However researchers, policymakers and industry everywhere are taking huge strides to overcome these - from the development of hugely innovative new technologies to engineer network architecture; to meeting the spectrum requirements; ensuring that 5G has a positive effect on developing countries and we avoid the risk if it actually deepening the digital divide; and tackling the security challenges.

Split into two sections, this session will address many of these key issues and challenges. First of all, we will have a mini-panel offering the opportunity to examine the important issue of finding the required spectrum for 5G – ahead of the important WRC-15 meeting later this year, where many key bandplan decisions are set to be taken. Then following this, we will look more broadly at some of the other obstacles that remain, and examine possible solutions as we look towards the unleashing the potential of 5G technologies for the benefit of users everywhere.

This session will provide the opportunity to look beyond the forthcoming WRC-15 meeting at the future shape of the spectrum landscape, and how the requirements of 5G can be met.

What technologies and bands offer the best solutions to meet the spectrum requirements of 5G?
To what extent can shared solutions be used to meet spectrum needs?
Can spectrum in the millimeter-wave frequency bands help to provide a solution?
How is 5G set to affect how we use spectrum, and what decisions and changes need to be made over the next few years to ensure that we are ready for 5G rollout by 2020?

Session 6: 5G Business Cases - New Business Models and Commercial Opportunities Across Different Sectors

As discussed in the last session, 5G is going to have a huge impact across a wide variety of sectors, and is set to revolutionise almost all aspects of society. This session will focus on exactly what this is going to mean for traditional and new businesses everywhere, and on the new business models and commercial opportunities that may appear. An introductory presentation will set the scene by looking at the added value that 5G can create generally across different vertical markets and how it can be ensured that new business models are sustainable. This will then be followed by a number of presentations focusing specifically on the potential of 5G in the Automotive industry – a sector which is predicted will be one of the earliest adopters of 5G technology, and one in which it is set to have the greatest effect.
