Session 1: E-Commerce in Europe - Today and Tomorrow
E-Commerce is making a significant positive economic impact in Europe while driving innovation and efficiency in the ways in which purchases are made. Consumers are purchasing cross-channel and have been deemed “agile” in their behaviour. Hyper-connectivity also points to new opportunities for business and consumers alike. This session will provide an update on the state of e-commerce in Europe and will discuss strategically what the key challenges are for policymakers, industry and other stakeholders in ensuring that e-commerce continues to deliver for the European consumer and economy. Fundamentally – what do we want e-commerce in Europe to look like tomorrow?

Session 2: E-Commerce and European SMEs
Encouraging European SMEs, both startups and existing business, to have an online e-commerce presence is as an important factor in efforts to drive growth in Europe. The Digital Agenda for Europe sets targets for increasing the SME share of online sales to 33% by 2015. How can big business help SMEs in this process? What policy options might be available over the next few years to provide support in this endeavour? What might the consequences be, both positive and negative, of such a shift?

Distribution
In the final delivery to the consumer of their purchased goods, whether digital or physical, the efficiency of the process is key in continuing the positive trend for ecommerce in Europe. The privatisation of the postal operators across Europe and many new market entrants offering different services, has led to a big shake up in the postal and logistics sector. On digital distribution, recent controversies such as the failed ACTA negotiations have left the copyright and IPR fields in need of greater clarity. What are the next steps for policymakers and businesses in determining a clearer, more efficient future of the distribution of goods purchased online?

Payments and Security
Ensuring the safe processing of online payments and protecting consumers against identity fraud are both key to building greater confidence in e-commerce, particularly cross-border, in Europe. What are policymakers and businesses doing to ensure the online economy remains a safe place to operate? What innovative payment solutions are being developed which will help drive both convenience and efficiency.
