Supported by

SABER (Satellite Broadband for European Regions)
SABER (Satellite Broadband for European Regions) is a European funded project under the ICT Policy Support Programme.
The overarching objective of SABER is to explore the option of satellite broadband services to bridge the digital divide across Europe and hence support the realization of the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE) targets of achieving 100% basic broadband coverage by 2013 and achieving 100% access to 30mbs and above by 2020.
SABER will seek to support the delivery of the DAE targets by:
• raising awareness of the potential of satellite broadband solutions;
• sharing best practices in the use of public funds for initiatives to encourage citizen and businesses to take up satellite broadband solutions;
• analysing non-technological roadblocks in public procurement and providing solutions;
• developing guidelines for procuring and planning the deployment of satellite broadband;
• disseminating information to regions across Europe.
SABER, over the course of the project, will produce a number of deliverables which ultimately will be placed in the public domain for use by a wide range of stakeholders across Europe; regional policy and investment decision makers being the main target audience.
The initial deliverables produced include:
• regional / National satellite broadband implementation case studies (including detailed best practices from FR, ES, UK, IT, EL & NO)
• early report on satellite broadband as an option for regions (including a state-of-art review of the retail offers: 250 references including Eutelsat, SES, Avanti, HellasSat and Hispasat)
• early guidelines for the public sector on satellite services procurement.

As voice of the European Regions, NEREUS not only serves as an advocate for the regions in matters of space uses but also as a direct channel to the regional users of space technologies (such as local authorities, SMEs, universities and research institutes and citizens).
